From today's featured articleSimon Hatley (1685 – after 1723) was an English sailor involved in two hazardous privateering voyages to the South Pacific Ocean. With his ship beset by storms south of Cape Horn, Hatley shot an albatross, an incident immortalised by Samuel Taylor Coleridge in The Rime of the Ancient Mariner (illustrated). Hatley went to sea in 1708 under Captain Woodes Rogers, but was captured by the Spanish on the coast of Ecuador and was tortured by the Inquisition. Hatley's second voyage, under George Shelvocke, was the source of the albatross incident, recorded in Shelvocke's journal for 1 October 1719, and also ended with his capture by the Spanish, who held him as a pirate for looting a Portuguese ship. Hatley returned to Britain in 1723, though he hastily sailed to Jamaica lest he risk trial for piracy. His fate thereafter is unknown. In 1797, Wordsworth suggested Hatley's shooting of an albatross as the basis of a poem, which Coleridge published in Lyrical Ballads (1798). (Full article..) Recently featured: Did you know..

The history of the divine is the history of human thought. For as long as men and women have pondered the mysteries of their existence, they have answered their own questions with stories of gods and goddesses. Belief in these deities shaped whole civilizations, yet today many of their names and images lie buried. The Encyclopedia of Ancient Deities makes those names available to the general reader as well as the scholar. This reference work lists all the known gods through recorded history. Alphabetically arranged entries provide the name of each deity (with alternate spellings), as well as notes on names that may be linguistically or functionally related. The tribe or culture that worshiped the deity is identified, and the god's origins and functions are explained. An extensive bibliography provides opportunities for further research and an exhaustive index provides access to the entries through virtually all names, forms and kinds of deities.

Throughout history, humans have pondered the question of their existence. In nearly every society, part of the answer has included some form of god or goddess. For the Mayans, one such deity was Ajtzak, who tried to create humans from wood; for the Yorubas of Africa, Shango controlled the thunder and lightning. The Chinese of the Shang dynasty era worshipped Shang Ti. Evil deities were also part of the answer, as in the case of the Kuvera, the Hindu chief of evil in the Vedic period, and Tu, the Persian or Islamic demon of fatal accidents. All of the known ancient gods, many heretofore obscure or known only from mythological literature, are included in this exhaustive reference work. The focus is on their origins, histories, and functions. The people who believed in each deity are identified, along with alternate names or spellings both old and modern. The descriptions that follow are of the functions, origins and physical nature of the deities. Extensive cross references are provided for alternate spellings and names.

Throughout history, questions of life and death, famine and bounty, good and bad luck have puzzled people the world over, and they have attempted to solve mysteries and allay fears in the same way - through the worship of gods. Arranged alphabetically from A-a, the sun goddess of Mesopotamia, to Zurvan, the Persian god of fate, Encyclopedia of Gods is the most broadly based work of reference yet produced on gods from all over the world. Giving equal emphasis to ancient mythology and contemporary religions, the entries explain the culture of origin and the role of each god or goddess, while longer essays give details of artistic and literary references, known dates of worship and legends associated with the more important deities.

In ancient times the man was very dependent on the nature and natural phenomena. The world in the conception of people of that period was divided into three parts–the sky, the earth, and the underworld. This image of the world was depicted as the World Tree which united these three worlds into a single entity. The World Tree was a symbol of the three worlds–its crown represented the sky, its trunk was the symbol of the earth, the roots were the symbol of the underworld. The world of the ancient Slavs consisted of three parts: Prav–the world of gods, Yav–the world of people, and Nav–the underworld. The beliefs of the Slavic tribes, both western and eastern, were connected with worshipping different tribal deities and spirits. The Slavs who were living on the vast territory of Europe in ancient timed had some common gods with similar names as the ancestors of the Slavs used to be united. Besides, the Slavs worshipped the powers of nature–they deified the sun, the moon, natural phenomena, theologizing them, and believed that natural phenomena depended on the will of gods. Therefore, to gain gods’ good grace people tried to blandish them in different ways. Special sacred rituals were held for this purpose at a particular time of the year, they made sacrifices to gods, asked the gods for help in prayers and thanked for success. Svarog and Damp Mother Earth were some of the most ancient gods. The book is written in a simple and clear language and is intended for a wide circle of readers interested in mythology, ancient history and culture. The book contains a lot of ethnographic, historic and occulted information as well as stylized pictures of ancient Slavic gods and spirits.
